And so the Grenadiers did, as the Irish had done during the break-out from the Meuse-Escaut Canal. However, to some of the airborne officers, both British and American, who watched the Guards at work, they did give the impression of being deliberate and unflappable, as Guardsmen are expected to be, but possibly rather too much so at times. Much was to change during the harsh winter of 1944–45, when the war seemed as if it could well continue for ever. But, before that, the intoxicating successes of the late summer of 1944 had persuaded a lot of people to look towards the prospect of life in a post-war world.
